Carbon Capital is a leader in the establishment of carbon trading and reforestation businesses based upon the United Nations’ Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).
To date, Carbon Capital has raised investments of over £300 million, and has established a series of Carbon Trading Partnerships which fund reforestation and renewable energy projects in the developing world.
The Carbon Trading Partnerships hold rights to almost 800,000 hectares of land in tropical developing countries.
The Carbon Trading Partnerships have commissioned extensive research projects to establish how to maximise carbon sequestration, timber and renewable energy yields within the context of the CDM.Working with FSA regulated operator and sponsor Curzon Capital Limited, Carbon Capital raised £68 million of equity and debt finance in 2004-2005 and established the first generation of carbon emissions trading businesses (eight in total), structured as Limited Liability Partnerships. Each of these enterprises has completed its first year of a three year research and development programme on degraded rainforest in Brazil in order to determine the maximum carbon-sequestration achievable through reforestation within the CDM framework. Carbon Capital, as managing member of each LLP, has engaged leading project manager and environmental research consultancy, Carbon Positive Ltd, to manage these research programmes.
In full consultation with each LLP Member, Carbon Capital manages the Carbon Trading Partnerships on a day-to-day operational basis. It also manages their commercial activities and longer term business development on a similar basis.
